PLAID HEADBAND Number 744-1 1 (Shown on page 25) MATERIALS REQUIRED: Colulnbia-Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 ounce skein) 1 skein OR Nantuk Knitting Worsted (2 ounce skein) 1 skein AND a few strands of two Contrasting Colors for Plaid Embroidery. Knitting Needles: 1 pair "Boye" Size 8 Gauge: 4 1/2 stitches to 1 inch, 6 rows to 1 inch Cast on 4 stitches. Row 1. Knit. Row 2 Knit. Row 3 Increase 1 stitch in first stitch knit across row, increasing 1 stitch in last stitch. Row 4 Knit. Rows 5 through 8 Repeat Rows 3 and 4 two times. Row 9 Same as Row 3. Row 10 Knit 4, purl 4, knit 4. Row 11 Same as Row 3. Row 12 Knit 4 purl across to within last 4 stitches knit 4. Repeat Rows 11 and 12 until there are 28 stitches on needle, ending on wrong side of work. Next row on right side of work knit across row. On wrong side of work knit 4, purl 20, knit 4. Continue in this manner until work measures 12 1/2 inches from start ending on wrong side of work. Decrease for other point as follows: Row 1 Knit 2 stitches together, knit across to last 2 stitches, knit last 2 stitches together. Row 2 Knit 4, purl across to last 4 stitches, knit 4. Repeat last 2 rows until 12 stitches remain. Continue to decrease l stitch each side every other row working remainder of point in garter stitch until 4 stitches remain bind off. Make twisted cord and fasten one to each end by using 2 strands of yarn cut 42 inches long (To make twisted cord see inside back cover). Row 1 Knit. Row 2 Purl Row 3 Increase 1 stitch in first stitch knit across row, increasing l stitch in last stitch. Rows 4 through 7 Repeat Rows 2 and 3 two times. Row 8 Knit 1 stitch, purl 8 stitches, knit 1 stitch. Row 9 Cable row: Increase 1 stitch in first stitch. Place a marker on needle slip next 4 stitches onto cable needle and hold in back of work, knit next 4 stitches, then knit the 4 stitches from cable needle for cable twist place a marker on needle increase 1 stitch in last stitch. Row 10 Knit to marker, purl 8, knit to end of row . Row 11 Increase 1 stitch in first stitch, knit across rows, increasing 1 stitch in last stitch. Rows 12 through 15: repeat Rows 10 and 11 two times more. Row 16 same as Row 10. Row 17 Increase 1 stitch in first stitch, knit to marker. Twist cable as before knit to end of row, increasing l stitch in last stitch. Rows 18 through 23: Repeat Rows l 0 and 11 three times more. Row 24: Same as Row l0. Row 25: Same as Row 17 . Row 26: Knit 10, purl 8, knit 10 . Row 27: Knit. Rows 28 through 31: Repeat Rows 26 and 27 twice . Row 32: same as Row 26. Row 33: Knit to marker. Twist cable as before knit to end of row. Repeat Rows 26 through 33 until there are 13 cable twists from start continuing to twist cable every 8th row. Next row--wrong side of work knit to marker. Purl 8, knit to end of row. On right side of work knit 2 together, knit to last 2 stitches, knit 2 together. Repeat these last 2 rows continuing to twist cable as before until 4 stitches remain. Bind off. Make twisted cords and fasten to each end by using 2 strands of yarn cut 42 inches long (to twist cord sets inside back cover).
