Cast on an even number of stitches. 
Knit the first and last stitch of every row for a firm selvedge.

Row 1: knit
Row 2: (k2tog, yo) to the end
Row 3: knit

Yes, it's a three-row repeat: that's what makes it reversible.
I believe it's original, though I may have only "unvented" it.
